Newsletter Summer Term 10
We have been rewarded with lovely summer weather at last to make us all cheerful although in school we don’t need this, as we have your lovely children to keep us always happy.
1. Our Talking Topic
This week our assembly theme has been ‘caring for animals’ and treating them with kindness as they are all God’s creatures. Please talk to your child about this.
2. Our Value
This week we have been working on ‘responsibility’. Very well done to Moriell Sepe, Kodi Amison, India Spooner, all the Athletics Team at Northwood, Rianne Hodges, Theo Lovell,
Lucas Conway-Kendall, Archie Hambleton and Holly Bently who have been seen by Miss Khan showing great responsibility.
3. New Trim Trail
You will have noticed the new Trim Trail which has been installed for KS2 children at break and dinner time. We are a healthy school and want to make all our children as active as possible. Children are not allowed on it before or after school as they are not supervised. We hope to add to it this over time and hope you agree it is a good addition to our school. We shall be doing a fitness test with all classes before the end of term and seeing what else we need to do. The last Monday of term July 20th is a PE day when the children can all come in kit. We have lots of exciting activities planned. The last Tuesday will be normal school uniform for a final assembly, presentation of attendance awards and good behaviour rewards.
4. Last Week and This Week in School
- We finished the KS1 visits to Tittersworth Reservoir organised by Miss Mazzei. They were all successful and the children learnt a lot as well as having a lovely walk.
- The Athletics Team competed in the ‘Town Athletics Competition’ at Northwood Stadium on Friday. This is a gifted and talented opportunity as all children compete in classes, mixed age children then compete and the best children are selected and coached. The children all performed really well and some have been selected to represent the Town. There were especially super performances in the finals from Chad Varquez 1st in sack, Anet Yohannan
2nd sack & skipping, Kyle Lovatt 3rd in sack and skip, Lily-May Barlow 3rd sack, Aaron Marshall 3rd in skipping, Y6 relay team 3rd place, Jessica Cotterill 4th skipping and Natalia Kulik 4th sack. Miss Burgess and I judged events but Miss Pickerill and Mrs Barrow were full of praise for the behaviour and team work from all the children. We could see other schools not as well behaved. Very well done to the team!
- We had the Space Bus for all children in Nursery and Reception on Monday. This was a lovely fun activity learning about space and having great fun to help speech and language. The children all really enjoyed it. A group of KS1 and KS2 children were chosen by class teachers who have been doing especially well with home reading to go on over dinner time.
- Well done to Aleksi Vrapi, Alexander Morrey and Michael Chmielewski who passed their Beginner’s Award in swimming.
The bus carrying 45 children and staff on Friday could not get in as 6 cars were parked in Wheatly Avenue where it is illegal to park. They caused us and the waiting families inconvenience and due to an issue with a nursery child running off at the gate, putting this child’s safety in danger. It was also inconsiderate to other children and families. There is always space in Harpfield’s Road and just behind it and it was a lovely day and many families live close and could have chosen the healthy option of walking. A post code map is included which shows where all our families live and the majority live within walking distance.
This morning there was an accident caused by a parked car and parents/carers have contacted the police. The issue was caused by parking irresponsibility and the driver not being aware of young children, this could have been very serious.
6. Safety in the Sun
As part of our Sun Protection Policy (that we have not had to use for 2 years!) we tell parent/carers that it is our responsibility to talk to the children about safety in the sun. We insist all jumpers are taken off. All classes have named water bottles that are filled each morning every day by staff. In hot weather they are refilled at lunch time and children have access to water in the classroom. Nursery and Reception have water available all day as well. If it is very hot PE lessons can be shortened and completed inside if staff are concerned or with a break to come inside for a drink of water. Water is provided after all PE lessons as well. It is parents/carers responsibility to apply sunscreen if needed, send children with appropriate cool uniform, a hat and to make sure they have a drink with any packed lunch.
7. Y6 Leavers Concert
This is on Tuesday 14th July at 6:00 when Y6 traditionally tell us their memories and sing some songs. The group have all been practising and it promises to be a great occasion. Family and friends are welcome to just turn up at 5:45. We look forward to seeing all our Y6 families.
8. Rough Play
We have had some instances of rough play at lunch time which we have not had for a while as since Christmas we have had very few incidents of poor behaviour at lunch time. We think this is because we have been letting some groups go on the grass. Children have been told it is unacceptable and will be taken off the yards if it occurs and this privilege taken away. The photos below show lovely lunch time play on one of the yards on Wednesday.
Thank you for feedback slips that have been returned and we are keen to have more in. As a result of 2 parent comments Miss Mazzei and I have altered the format. Thank you for your help here. It is lovely to note all the positive comments about the children’s learning.
10. Photo Image Policy
Please can we remind parents/carers that our policy which has been signed by all parents/carers is that any photographic/video images “are for personal use only and will not be posted on any media/social networking sites,” this follows a complaint from a local resident.
11. Bug Club
This has been updated and the log in was wrong on last week’s newsletter. The usernames and passwords are the same. Please go to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk and the school code is sjc
12. Community Summer Fair
Thank you so much for all your generous donations. The weather forecast looks good, so please come and support this event which is put on for families to enjoy and to raise money for educational visits for your children. This Saturday 4th July 12pm until 2pm!
13. Safety on School Grounds
Many parents/carers have mentioned two schools this week, when strangers have been on school premises. This is why we have staff out before and after school and have CCTV. Parents/carers have mentioned that they feel our school is safe.
This will take place on Thursday 16th July, entrance is £2.00 and includes a drink and a packet of crisps, other tuck will be available to buy.
The disco for Reception to Y2 is at 3:00pm-4:00pm, a change of clothes can be brought into school.
The disco for Y3 to Y6 is at 4:00pm – 5:00pm, please note that children will have to go home in between the end of school and the disco starting as we have no provision to look after them for that time.
15. Reminder for Y2
Please be aware that the current Y2 children who currently can have the Universal Free School Meals will no longer qualify for them in September.
16. Home School Link Worker Information
A reminder that if your child’s attendance is 100% from the 1st June to the 21st July they will come home with a prize on the Tuesday. Some of the Year 6 will be attending high schools on those days so they will be given their prize on Friday 17th June.
The Government expect attendance to be 95% – 100% and St John’s work towards this.
In the new term your child’s absence will be unauthorised until we receive a reason why they are off, so it is important that you ring the school and leave a message to say why, and how long they are to be expected to be off school. If they stay unauthorised and attendance is low, the Education Welfare Office will be able to take action.
Reminder – if your child is off from school
- Call 238889
- Press 1
- Leave a message – child’s name, class, why they are off and how long they are expected to be off.
Children with coughs, colds, sore throats and headaches should be in school. If a child is ill we will phone you to come and fetch them.
- Date for your diary – Get together on Friday 17th July 9:00am – 10:00am for a drink, croissant and chat in the community room, all welcome.
