School Cycle Parking Permit

Cycling to School – Important Notice to Parents

St John’s CE (A) Primary School has cycle parking facilities. Walking and cycling to school in particular helps children to keep fit and healthy as well as developing their road sense over time, enabling them to become better prepared for independent journeys later on. It also encourages sustainable travel to school.

We have decided to introduce a Cycle Parking Permit Scheme in school.

This means that only children with a permit can cycle to school and use the cycle storage facilities.

The scheme, run in conjunction with the City Council’s Transport Planning Group, sets out conditions overleaf. If you wish your child to cycle to school please complete the form below.

In addition to this permit, your child will be issued with a cycle permit card. They may be asked to produce this in order to verify that your child has complied with the conditions laid out. I am sure you will agree these measures introduced indicate how serious we are taking the issue. The safety of our children is paramount.

St John’s CE (A) Primary School reserves the right to revoke this permit if any of the conditions set are ignored or breached.

Our school recognises that cycle parking facilities alone will not encourage/persuade parents to allow their child to cycle to school. The decision as to whether your child is competent and confident enough to cycle to and from school will be yours and yours alone.

St John’s CE (A) Primary School does not accept liability for any consequences of that decision.

Remember: Your child can only use the cycle storage facility if we give him/her a permit. We only have limited cycle spaces. The permit is free.

  1. Cyclist Training

All cyclists who cycle to St John’s CE (A) Primary School should undertake and successfully complete a cyclist training course organised by Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Transportation and Road Safety Group, which is offered each year.

  1. Bicycle Maintenance

All bicycles must be in a roadworthy condition and must be periodically checked by parents. In addition, we recommend your child’s bicycle undergo a regular ‘service’ at a reputable cycle dealer, every quarter (or at the school’s discretion).

  1. Bicycle Helmets/Lights/Fluorescent Clothing

Every cyclist wishing to cycle and park their bicycle at our school should wear an approved standard of cycle helmet. Furthermore, at times of inclement weather and reduced visibility, appropriate lights and high visibility clothing should be considered. It may be worth considering waterproof clothing.

  1. Cycle Parking

All cyclists, both parents/carers and children, must walk their bicycles inside the school ground and bicycles must be securely locked in the approved parking area. (Bicycle locks will not be provided by the school).

  1. Highway Code

Cyclists must ride sensibly when riding to and from school and follow the Highway Code.

N.B. Parents/Carers are advised to take out appropriate insurance cover as the school’s insurance does not cover loss or damage to cycles on our premises, and we ask for a lock to be provided for each cycle.

Please complete the form below and return to school.
